Q.
How long does it take for my DNS changes to take effect?
A.

Any changes to your DNS records are replicated to our DNS servers every 20 minutes.

Please allow 24 – 48 hours to ensure your DNS changes have published fully across the Internet. There is no way to speed up this process as all ISP's need to refresh their servers worldwide.

Q.
What is a AAAA record?
A.
An AAAA record or quad-A record maps hostnames to IPv6 records.
Q.
What is a domain name?
A.

The purpose of a domain name is to identify your business on the internet. A domain name is similar to your business' street address, but it is your address for the web and is typically something like www.yourbusinessname.com.au. A domain name by itself is not very useful, but when used in conjunction with a web site and WebCentral's world-class hosting services, internet users around the world will be able to locate your business on the internet. WebCentral can help you secure a domain name for your business - Simply call our Sales Team on 1800 800 099 (ext. 1) to discuss your domain name options.

Q.
What is a TXT record?
A.
A TXT record allows an for arbitrary text to be inserted into a DNS record. For example, this record is used to implement the Sender Policy Framework specification.
Q.
What is an MX record?
A.
An MX record tells email programs where to deliver mail to, like an address on a letter sent in the post. If a company is running their own mail exchange it is required to modify the MX record to point to those servers for the office to send and receive email.
Q.
What is an A record?
A.

An A Record connects a host name to an IP address. When computers connect to each other they connect using IP addresses ie: 203.27.227.23. An A Record allows easily remembered internet addresses. A Record’s are very customizable in that you can create numerous A Records to direct to multiple IP addresses.

If webcentral.com.au is the domain name, a few common examples of A Records are:

  • webcentral.com.au
  • www.webcentral.com.au
  • mail.webcentral.com.au
  • shop.webcentral.com.au
Q.
What is an CNAME record?
A.

A CNAME record is an alias to another record. So for example unlike an A record where you point to an IP address. With a CNAME you point to another name.

An example CNAME entry:

www.example.com. 86400 IN CNAME www.example.org.

A CNAME record is a complicated DNS edit and should only be done where absolutely required.

Q.
What is DNS?
A.

DNS is an abbreviation for Domain Name System.

DNS determines where email is delivered, what website is displayed and where web traffic is directed.

It is through DNS that domain names are found on the Internet as DNS maps IP addresses to easier to remember hostnames e.g. 203.210.124.11 maps to www.webcentral.com.au.

Q.
What is the TTL?
A.
The TTL specified per DNS record defaults to 3600 seconds.
