Why not having a mobile-friendly website will destroy your business

Will having a website that isn’t mobile-friendly really destroy your business, or are we just trying to scare you?

As with all good business decisions, having qualified data and hard facts on hand allows you to make the best decisions as a business going forward.

So what data and facts are out there to prove that not having a mobile-friendly website will kill your business?

1. Mobile devices now beat desktop computers

ComScore predicted that in 2014 mobile traffic would surpass desktop traffic:


Their prediction was confirmed in 2015 by Google who stated that the majority of online searchers are now coming from mobile devices.

A much more recent ComScore report revealed that mobile Internet usage has risen by 394% over the past few years, with no signs of slowing down.

2. Google penalises businesses that offer a poor mobile experience

Smartphones and tablets are some of the most used devices for searching the internet:

Yes, to watch cute cat videos, but also to find a business, product, or service they are looking for, rather than using the Yellow Pages or other print media. Unlike traditional printed media in which all businesses were listed in alphabetical order, search engines online order business listings by a rank determined by factors like relevance, quality, and user experience.

Not offering a good mobile user experience is one of the factors that Google will penalise you for, resulting in your site being placed lower in the searches.

This means that even if you offer a better product or service than your competitor, or a bigger range of products, if your website is not mobile-friendly you will rank below them and be out of view.

3. Consumers want mobile friendly websites

Online consumers today are the hardest to please.

With websites like Amazon, Ebay, Apple, and Shopify making their entire shopping experience painless, websites that fail to render correctly or don’t offer a streamlined user experience leave them frustrated:

And a frustrated prospect is a lost prospect.

But all my business is done offline, why should I bother with a mobile-friendly website?

A mobile-friendly website is a must for everyone. A Google report stated that:

  • 50% of local mobile searches lead to store visits within 24 hours
  • 53% of mobile searchers are looking for directions to a local store
  • 54% are searching for business opening hours
  • 15% of in-store activities started from a search using a smartphone
