The benefits of a dedicated SSL
If your website has sensitive data passing through it and you get hacked, what happens to that data? It can easily be read by anyone who gains access to your website, which is where having an SSL Certificate comes in handy. But what’s an SSL Certificate and does your website need one?
I spoke with Netregistry’s SSL Expert, Frank Americanos, who is well versed in the ins and outs of SSL and takes care of all our customers’ SSL needs. He took some time out from solving customer issues to explain why you might consider purchasing an SSL Certificate.
“A SSL Certificate securely passes sensitive data from the user to our server, encrypted so it is not easily read by a hacker,” said Frank, “It’s commonly used on websites with an e-commerce component, a log in portal that records customers’ sensitive details or for banking websites.”
“You can identify a website using SSL by the padlock next to the domain name in the address bar in your Internet browser,” he explained. This is an important symbol to look for before supplying your credit card details when making purchases online.
A dedicated SSL Certificate can be installed on any domain name and is unique to that domain, making it a great professional solution for online businesses. It ensures your data is encrypted against hackers and makes your customers feel safe when using your website.
For businesses sending out confidential information in emails, Frank said an SSL service can also be set up on your email server to encrypt all email details, including receipient details, the content of the email and any file attachments. “Every business with a ‘confidentiality’ note at the bottom of their email probably has SSL for email turned on,” said Frank. “It’s essential for anyone emailing sensitive data to clients or friends.”
Netregistry has SSL Certificates installed on all their mail servers, which you can read more about here.
