SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. With a good SEO strategy, you can get your business to page #1 of Google without advertising. But Google is tricky to figure out because its algorithm is always changing.

To understand SEO, first you need to understand how search engines work.

There are over 600 million active websites on the internet. That’s a lot of information to digest. Search engines exist to categorise and filter all this information and help users find what’s most useful to them. To do that, search engines sort through the web to learn what’s on every page and how each page relates to the next. Then, using an algorithm, pages are ranked according to their relevance to the terms searched. This helps searchers find exactly what they’re looking for.

The average searcher is likely to run a new search rather than clicking past page one. This means that the higher your page ranks, the more people are likely to find you.

Search engine optimisation takes what we know about the ranking algorithm and uses it to determine improvements we can make to the site. This helps the site rank higher for particular keywords.

Algorithms can differ from search engine to search engine but, with over 90% of the world choosing Google as their primary search engine, we use it as a benchmark for SEO practice.

SEO is a long-term strategy. Google constantly changes their algorithm to improve user experience so websites need to continue to adapt to emerging ranking factors. This is why it can be so difficult to carry out SEO without the ongoing support of a dedicated expert.

If you want to see more customers across your website in the long term, adding an SEO strategy to your marketing mix will help you get there.
